Dude Fest!
I'm attending a complete dude fest, also known as the annual American Urological Association (AUA) meeting. It's held in the illustrious city of Chicago this year, and it's been quite fun and informative so far. Though it has "american" as part of its acronym, the AUA is actually quite an international event with tons of international urologists in attendance. I'm constantly hearing Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, French, Korean, Japanese, German and many other languages in the meeting halls. It's quite impressive and makes for a nice multi-cultural event.
However, I'm never more amazed at the paucity of women in urology than when I attend a meeting like this. There are literally thousands of urologists buzzing around at the convention center, most in a conservative (and dare I say unfashionable) grey or navy suit, with the occasional woman thrown in for good measure. The ratio is quite impressive, and I do somewhat feel like a single daffodil in a bed of roses. (or something like that...I can't think of another analogy right now). And more often that not, when I see another woman, she really ends up being a pharmaceutical representative....
The one HUGE advantage for me are the mostly vacant women's restrooms. There is never a line and most of the time, I have the multi-stall bathrooms all to myself! When does that ever happen anywhere else?
And with such a concentration of urologists in one meeting, the conversation is bound the be fascinating!!! Urine, prostate, ED... what more could you ask for?

My drs are there now, only they only have a 45 min drive this year!! although it still gets us a day without pts! AUA is probably the only place with vacant female bathrooms! awesome lol I hope you are having fun!
Uro*ma
Seems a real shame there aren't more women urologists. I would have given my left arm for the comfort of a female urologist 10 years ago when I was having problems (eventually diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis - Elmiron was a godsend,in remission now)
Our Urologists went to Stockholm in March...I haven't heard about anyone (yet) visiting Chicago though...
If you're one of the few female Urologists, how do you set the dress code for the convention?! Or are you pretty much able to wear anything you desire just because there will be no comparison between casual/ dressy women around(cause female casual can be quite pretty)?! :-D
oh my goodness you are right! must be a thrill having the bathrooms to yourself :D
so pray tell, what funky outfits do you wear? :D
The conference sounds fun, although I'll bet you've seen one too many pissing contests
bud-da ching!
Where I live there are no female urologists. I would have been overjoyed to have a female urologist when I had multiple kidney stones, two stents, surgeries, and ultimately a blood infection when I was 22 and pregnant/postpartum. I was mortiified when the morning after I gave birth I had to have my male urologist perform a stent removal and stone removal.
I love dressing for these conferences because I feel I can really get away from the usual conservative dark suits. I prefer lighter more spring-inspired colors that still look professional, yet remain young, feminine and fashionable. This year, I was especially fond of my cap-sleeved light grey suit paired with a pencil skirt or white pants.
And yes, we do need more women in urology; thankfully it's slowly changing, but certainly not fast enough for all those female patients who want female docs....
...so there might be some room for me in Uro when I graduate next year... :-D
Do you ever find you have trouble being in such a male dominated field? Urology is certainly something I'd consider (provided my scores are high enough!) so it's really nice to get to see a woman's opinion of it. I'll be starting 3rd year at the end of June so I'm hoping I really will get to see a little bit of everything!
Hi Keagirl -glad you enjoyed yourself.
Someday...tell us why you chose urology...or even being a doctor.
I'd be fascinated with all the various languages being spoken at the conference. that must be interesting too.
The Independent urologist sent pictures from the conference to his blog.
Must be nice to make old and new professional connections too.
i am starting my urology residency in 1 1/2 months (eek!) and I went to the AUA. As a blond female, I know what you mean--we stick out like no other among the sea of men in navy/grey/borning colored suits. On the interview trail, about 20% (give or take a little depending on the place) applicants were female--yet of all the place I interviewed, I only had 1 interview with a female faculty member. The tide is changing, albeit slowly.
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

So who presented the best study of the conference?
How to buy prescription drugs...? My doctor prescribed vicodin for a while back, my back hurts, I think it is a great help, but in my country it is difficult to find, it is paramount to have my information on it and found information about findrxonline the medicine, because it provided me.
American Heart Association meetings - same thing. Only big "arena event" where the women's is empty. Hope you had fun at your convention!
Unfortunately I never experienced having the woman's bathroom all for myself. Must be a good feeling...
Has she been captured by Somali pirates again?
oh i think you are wright, some people prefer lighter more spring-inspired colors that still look professional, yet remain young, feminine and fashionable.

In view of the fact that narcotics can be addictive, they should only be prescribed when no other alternative is available and should only be taken as directed by your doctor, this indicated findrxonline in article. Most often, patients are required to consent to adhere to certain rules regarding the use of their prescription listed in a "Narcotic Agreement" between the patient and physician. Often, violation of this contract, especially selling, sharing, or trading the medication, attempting to obtain duplicate pain medication prescriptions from different physicians, and attempting to have the medication refilled early, at night, or on the weekend, to mention a few, would result in the patient's discharge from the practice.
What a nice Blog do you have Thanks a lot for sharing!
I thought about urology once - I love the surgery, and it was the first discipline to take up robots with a passion (my true love) - but I didn't want to get pigeonholed into urogynae, and the sexist attitudes of some of my attendings (discussing how they'd made the vagina tighter and better after a radical cystectomy + ileal conduit? not my cup of tea) really turned me off. Similarly, another attending blamed the poor treatment of prostate cancer on the feminisation of medicine and the reluctance of female docs to put a finger in it. I did not hear such comments from any other specialty, even the jock specialties like orthopaedics.
A close friend's girlfriend is applying for urology training, however, and I think it's a great thing.
The pains are sometimes reflected as something very badly; this is a warning of some ailment which we pruned to suffer. Sometimes we feel a pain in the waist and one in one of the kidneys which we can worry about. These pains are deceptive and sometimes the importance is not relevant. For this reason it is recommendable to get a physical control to recognize the ailment that causes the pain and power and to fight its origin. The pain in the waist, that can be acute or long lasting can return as chronic and is know to medics as lumbar pain.
