I'm all for exercising and getting a nice cardio workout, but I hate it when I have to do it unexpectedly.
I live on the 13th floor of my condo (strangely, I'm not superstitious about this), which is nice because we have a great panoramic view and we don't hear much street noise. But it is a nightmare when the elevators stop working, and you have to go up and down 13 flights of stairs with three dogs....
Much to my dismay, there was an electrical overload that shut down the elevators this morning, so I was forced to take the stairs in order to walk the dogs. The stairs are metal, so they make an enormous racket when you walk on them (kind of akin to taking a 3x4 and pounding on an empty oil drum); this was only compounded by the fact that I was wearing clogs, which made my dogs very uneasy, to say the least. In fact, I had to carry my 15 1/2 year old Terrier Mix in my arms because she couldn't handle them. Big Dog (who is a big scaredy baby - think Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz) had to be reluctantly pulled along, but the star of my trio was Beagle Boy who followed me closely without complaints. But then again, he does have the advantage of youth behind him.
The trip down was not fun, but the trip back up after their walk was much much worse. I consider myself relatively fit and healthy, but I had to take a breather on the 8th floor and by the time we arrived on the 13th, I was huffing and puffing. Thank goodness Crusty Terrier only weighs about 22 lbs...
